Dialpad strengthens its commitment to academic partnerships

The University of Edinburgh, University of British Columbia and more work with Dialpad to provide students with real-world work experiences

WATERLOO, Ontario — August 12, 2021 — Dialpad Inc., the industry leader in AI-powered communication and collaboration, announces its continuing partnership with multiple universities that have leading data science and AI programs in an effort to advance the fields of automatic speech recognition (ASR), natural language processing (NLP), machine learning (ML) and more.

This year, Dialpad closely collaborated with both the University of Edinburgh’s MSc Speech and Language Processing program and the University of British Columbia’s Master of Data Science (MDS) program to offer students the opportunity to work and learn alongside some of the leading experts in their respective fields. For each program, Dialpad provides dissertation topics and capstone projects that aim to improve Dialpad’s own proprietary Voice Intelligence (Vi™) engine. Vi delivers real-time business optimization, from call coaching and automated note-taking to sentiment tracking and transcription analysis. With the help of students from the University of Edinburgh and the University of British Columbia, Dialpad has continued to improve the precision of Vi. After benchmarking its ASR technology against competitors, Dialpad’s transcription model consistently comes out ahead when measuring accuracy.

"We are proud to have Dialpad as a partner,” said Milad Maymay, Director, Program Operations and student management, University of British Columbia. “As Dialpad has grown, so has its support of our capstone program. Together, we are able to provide students with real-world work experience on the cutting-edge of AI technology.”

“As it expands into new regions around the world, Dialpad plans to significantly increase the AI team to improve acoustic modeling, handle a wide range of accents and dialects, and model customers' unique vocabulary,” said Jonas Robertson, Manager, Speech Recognition at Dialpad and former student of the University of Edinburgh’s MSc Speech and Language Processing program. “We believe it’s critical to leverage diverse perspectives when building AI models. As such, our current team is an eclectic group of scientists and engineers, with backgrounds in diverse fields including linguistics, computational linguistics, machine learning, computer science, material science, biology, and quantum physics. We’re always looking for curious minds to help solve some of the biggest issues across business communications, which is why we partner with leading universities around the world.”

“The MSc in Speech and Language Processing program at the University of Edinburgh is delighted to continue working with Dialpad. Their team does a great job guiding our students and providing them with appropriate data and resources,” said Professor Simon King, Program Director. “We are selective about the industry partners where students do their projects. We only work with partners who care about the long-term success of our students and who provide them with the right start to their careers.”

With the new school year approaching, Dialpad resumes and strengthens its existing relationships while forging new alliances in academia, including Carleton University where Fred Mailhot, Automatic Speech Recognition Manager at Dialpad will share his expertise in a course titled “Language and Cognitive Science” starting this fall.
