Are free vanity phone numbers reliable?

Because they're free, there's often no guarantee that they'll be 100% reliable when customers try to call you. In some cases, the number may even be disconnected or reassigned to someone else without your knowledge. Paid vanity phone numbers, on the other hand, are generally much more reliable. This is because they're owned and operated by professional telecoms companies who have a vested interest in keeping their customers happy. Plus, paid vanity numbers come with additional features and benefits that free numbers generally can't match.

Vanity phone numbers are often toll-free numbers (the caller doesn't have to pay to call the business using that number), with the additional feature of being easy to remember because they spell out a word or phrase. Not all toll-free numbers have this, even though they are free to call for the callers.

How long does it take to activate a vanity phone number?

It usually takes around 3-5 business days to set up a vanity phone number. The first step is to decide on the number you want. Once you have a number in mind, the next step is to contact a phone service provider and request the number. The provider will then check to see if the number is available and, if it is, they will set up the new line for you.  If you're porting an existing phone number to a new service provider, the process may take a little longer. In this case, the old service provider will need to release the number before the new one can activate it. This can sometimes take up to 10 business days or more, depending on how difficult your old service provider is!
